Antique Quilts are a window into the world of antique fashion fabrics.  Pieces of fabrics left over from dressmaking projects were often used in quiltmaking.

ENGLISH HEXAGON PATCHWORK COVERLET.
This beautiful hexagon patchwork dates from the mid 19th century.  Pieced over papers and stitched by hand this patchwork contains many, many beautiful fabrics.  Not without faults there are several patches that are damaged.  The photographs show some of this damage.  This is a document piece but it would also make a stunning hanging.  The patchwork has been backed with a beige cotton sateen with a wide border.  This makes it strong enough to be mounted on to a batten for a wall hanging.

The fabrics used in this patchwork are predominantly cotton chintz or glazed cotton.  A lot of them have been imported from India via the East India Shipping Company and some of the designs are similar to those found in Paisley Shawls.
